Aside from apartment regulation, would it be appropriate to have a Great Dane in an apartment?
My aunt used to have one while living in an apartment. She said it was calm enough, though very big, to be living in an apartment, so long he got his exercise.
Great Danes are pretty calm and mellow as adults. And some people say that they are excellent indoor dogs because of this, big or not. But they have long legs…
Is this fair, even with exercise?
I LOVE this breed and have been wanting it for a long time. But I’m not going to get one if it isn’t fair to the dog…
Some people say it’s ok, some don’t.
What do you think?

Yep! Great Danes are big loafs. They will just lay around all day; they don’t need a yard like more active large breeds. A great dane is one of the few large dogs that will do just fine and be content in an apartment. Remember to take him/her on regular walks so that the dog gets enough exercise. (And keep in mind that will be some big poop to clean up as well; many apartments require you pick up the dog poop.)

Aside from the obvious – this is a large dog that takes up a lot of space, a dane can be kept in an apartment provided he still gets plenty of exercise. They don’t need a whole lot of exercise as young puppies, several short walks a day as well as play time. And as adults, they still need a really good walk or two a day to stay healthy, but they don’t have to have a yard to run around in. Besides, you can always take him to a dog park for running around time.

I think you just need to make sure you exercise your dog appropriately.
You also need to think of the convenience factor for potty breaks. If you are willing to leash walk your dog between 4 to 5 times a day, you should be fine.

I think its fair, as long as the apartment is not clutterd. Take the dog out for long walks everyday, and for a run in the park. If the dog can move freely in the apartment without getting stuck anywhere our knocking anything down, I don’t see the problem. Just because its a big dog, does’nt mean it needs a house, a dog does’nt care how big a house is. They are happy with food, health care, excercise, and love, they don’t judge!

Most of the Danes that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing have been some pretty mellow pups. However, they are large animals and you should have something to occupy their time with when you aren’t present like a Kong, or another pet. If you’re willing to walk it enough you can keep a Dane in a shoebox.

I beleive a dog that big needs space. However, given the breed, Great Danes think they are lap dogs and are just big ol loves. They are pretty mellow. It’s VERY important that this dog gets at least TWO walks a day. Morning and evening. go for half hour to 45 minutes to keep his body and mind healthy. That’s my opinion. My friend is getting a Dane TODAY, a harlequin. But she’s got 5 acres and 10 other dogs. Anyway, take him to the park and play fetch and run around. It’ll be good for both of you but you have to be disciplined in walking him/her. K? Good luck with your new puppy. Be sure to take it to obedience school and get it spayed or neutered. : )

Danes are actually GREAT apartment dogs, so long as they get daily exercise, as with any dog! As for me personally, there are many breeds of smaller dogs I would NEVER put in an apartment-certain terriers, huskies, border collies. I know definitely people do have these breeds but it takes a great commitment to exercise & staving off boredom. It really sounds like you know about Danes & know what you are going to be getting into. I commend you for doing your research before jumping right in!

Great Danes were originally bred for hunting boar, they are fast, untiring and reliable dogs. They are calm, well mannered and normally quiet but it needs plenty of space. People do keep them in apartments but I don’t think this is a good idea if you want what’s best for the dog. It needs to run or walk 9 miles a day so it doesn’t get weak bones and muscles. They are a great breed of dog for certain people. I would recommend that you get a dog that is suitable for city living, there are plenty of great dog breeds that can live in the city, in an apartment: English Bulldog, Bull Terriers, Boxers, research the type of dog that is right for your lifestyle! its great that you love these dogs, but i personally think it would be abuse to hold such a large animal in an apartment; if u were to ask any animal trainer, vet, animal rights person, theyd all tell u the same thing; that big dogs just dont get along good with small places.
