Abdominal Exercise??

I am a competitive swimmer and i need to work on my strength training and i have found great exercises for my legs, arms, and back but not abdominals?? Any sugesstions??

It is quite simple – but they are horrible to most people

* SIT-UPS
* CRUNCHES
use a fit ball to perform different variations when you get bored with standard ones.

Google the net for types of sit-ups and which muscles they work, there are hundreds of sites with and without pictures.

Also try contracting your stomach muscles whilst you are sitting in the car, on the lounge, or anywhere, and before you know it, you will be strengthening your core without even knowing it.

    Power 90 has a tremendous stomach exercise routine. It breaks it down into 10 different exercises. You should check it out on beachbody.com. No, I don’t work for the company, but I did the sets and look & feel terrific.

    Good luck.

    Latest info suggests that repetitive exercises like crunches or the ab lounger actually do more damage to your spine than good for your abs. It suggests that any exercise that you do that contracts your abs, and then holding that position for a count of 5-7 breathes is much better. You can do crunches this way, or seated knee raises, or even just contracting your absby pulling you upper body forward while seated or "sucking in" your stomach. Also take a look at some pilates core exercises and get your back, stomach and obliques all in one session.

    flutter kicks! they arn’t only fun they are great for your abs! also good for punishment if you are in the army 🙂
    1st. Lay on your back on something soft, like carpet or grass.
    2nd. put your hands next to your but or slightly under ( you will find a comfortbale spot so dont worry about that at first. as long as your palms are on the ground)
    3rd. keep your heels together and pick them up six inches off the ground. make sure your legs stay together
    4th. hold your neck up so that you are looking at your feet! must do this to work the abs.
    5th start moving your legs up and down. dont let your heels get closer than 6inches to the ground at any time.
    6th keeping your legs straight out at alls time you bring one foot up about 8 inches or 12 inches while mocing the other leg down! well you get the idea. while one leg is going up the other leg is going down. legs MUST be straight at all times dont bend your knees!
    7th keep going after you get tired!
    8th go a little bit farther! you’re doing GREAT!!

    you answered your own question 😉

    I was a swimmer, I played basketball, volleyball, and Track in high school.

    I must say, I puked quite a bit in track but when I started training for swimming..PUKED EVERYDAY!!!

    Swimming is the best exercise to do because it burns fat//tones muscles in ALL aread of your body!

    The Pilates-based C:

    sit on mat/floor, legs extended in front of, bent at the knees.
    Grasp back of thighs with both hands and lean back until arms are almost fully extended.
    Let got of legs, maintaining the C shape of your spine. That is the basic position.

    Now, try some of these, each for a full minute:
    – tap arms (from shoulders, not wrists) up and down against floor by your side
    – same movement but with arms by sides of thighs
    – both arms come down on one side, tap, go over head, tap again on other side

    There are more variations of this – use your imagination. These are great at working the girdle of your belly and make you look lean and sexy, not to mention give you great strength.

    Theresa Tapp also has a solid abs DVD that work your abs and more… search T-Tapp.

    Good luck!
