particularly road biking. does it work out your butt if you just sit and pedal? and does it make your butt firm?

YES, to work your glutes, when the pedal is at 3 o clock to 5 o clock position your foot should be parallel to the ground, not the toe pointed position.
It does if you are in a tucked riding position; if you are sitting too upright, your glutes dont get much range to move.

Yes, maybe not to the extent you think but you can surprise yourself in many ways by cycling.

It will, but a recumbent will more than a diamond frame.

Yes it will, you can feel your legs switch from the quads used more in a high cadence to the hamstrings and gluts when you power over small rises. Climbing hills with your hands on the hoods and or using the drops on long stretches will build your gluts more. About any time you have to pull on the bars to get more power you are using your gluts.
